"Margie", her nick name, and older sister Ethel grew up on the north side of Chicago. Showing interest only in dancing at first, she was given piano lessons but showed little enthusiasm. Fortuitously, she summoned the courage one day to approach a Mrs. Metzger, the teacher who she overheard teaching voice classes at Senn public school. This performance of Carmen was likely Margery Mayer's first appearance and the enthusiastic reactions from the live audience and responses from the over air listeners led to Miss Mayer being booked for at least three other appearances over the next year.
